Lewiston/ Niagara-on-the-Lake initiatives have included donations to the Libraries and Historical Societies in both Lewiston and NOTL, Lifeline projects on both sides of the border, donations to the Casey House, providing a tennis hitting board at a park in NOTL, providing a Polycom system to aid the doctors at Children’s Hospital in Buffalo help desperately ill children in the third world, and providing a coffee cart for patents, staff and family members at Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital We also provide Rotary Awards for academic achievement at local high schools and for many years we assisted an Interact group at Lewiston-Porter High School. We have sponsored scholarships for student s at the Niagara Parks School of Horticulture and Niagara College Culinary Program. We assisted the Maternity unit at Mt. St. Mary’s in raising funds for a transport isolet and an oxygen blender. We have provided defibrillators for the Lewiston Police Department to carry in their patrol cars and helped them buy necessary equipment to help in the case of a disturbance at he schools. We assisted Heart Safe in NOTL in providing defibrillators in public venues to help save lives. We helped provide plantings in Simcoe Park in NOTL and beautifying the Peace garden in Lewiston We have helped beautify a section of Route 104 outside of Lewiston and fund a Peace Garden in the Village of Lewiston. We have helped Newark Neighbors in NOTL, Heart and Soul Food Pantry in Niagara Falls, NY and Care and Share Food Pantry in Ransomville provide food to the needy. We have assisted the Greater Niagara Ballet Company bring ballet to children, as well as aided the Lewiston Town Supervisor in providing aid to veterans in need. We have assisted Bereaved Children through Camp Hope and the elderly and infirm at the Niagara Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
We have sponsored an Autism Awareness Day in conjunction with Oishei Children’s Hospital of Buffalo to educate the public about the condition and available resources, and, in conjunction with the Lewiston Council on the Arts, we sponsored the first Bluegrass Monday to entertain the public and promote local spirit and further innovative programs.
In the past we have supported Group Study Exchanges of young professionals from India and the Netherlands, supported Rotary Ambassadorial Fellowships to allow postgraduate studies in Mauritius. We have provided a truck to a medical mission in Chiapas. We have helped provide potable water in the third world by funding wells (and insured sustainability by funding sanitary latrines) , provided funding and housing so a child from Belarus could have life saving cardiac surgery in Toronto, helped provide vitamins, clothing and educational aid to a blind kindergarten in Minsk, supported the efforts of Rotary International to eradicate polio worldwide, spearheaded an effort to provide hundreds of wheelchairs to unfortunate children in Central America and provide specialized food for refeeding starvation victims. We have helped provide prenatal care in Haiti in collaboration with International Child Care and also helped provide funds for disaster relief in that area. Through our continued support for Rotary Gift of Life we have helped many children have life saving cardiac surgery, including supporting their most recent Global Grant in Santa Domingo.
We helped, through Shelter Box, to provide disaster relief in Miramar. As mentioned Our Club hopes to continue its message of service wherever and whenever it is needed and spread goodwill and understanding not only in the area in which we live but also throughout the world.
